Uncorking a Story

Hosted ByMike Carlon

Stories influence, teach and inspire us, but what about the storytellers who create them? Uncorking a Story profiles storytellers to uncover how their background and life experiences influence the stories they create. We learn what motivates them, their path to success, and what fuels them to keep creating. It all starts by asking one simple question, where does your story begin? Welcome to uncorking a story. Turning Pain into Purpose, with Bill Potts

Share the goodness!

Bill C. Potts is a motivational speaker, business leader, and community builder who has held executive roles at IRONMAN Group and Clearwater Marine Aquarium. He is co-founder and managing director of marketing agency Remedy 365 and a lecturer at Tulane University. An IRONMAN triathlete and a five-time cancer survivor, Bill is a long-time volunteer at his local homeless shelter and an advisory board member of the Halo House Foundation. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss his memoir Up for the Fight.

Key Themes

  1. The Writing Process: The writing process is a journey that requires dedication and perseverance. Just like running a marathon mile by mile, writers must tackle each sentence and follow a “training plan” to reach their desired destination.
  2. Heartbreak and Resilience: Exploring themes of heartbreak and resilience can create compelling stories that will be helpful to others. By delving into the emotions and experiences of characters who have faced loss, writers can create engaging narratives that resonate with readers.
  3. Embracing the Unavoidable: When writing about sensitive topics like cancer, it is important to address them honestly and authentically. Feedback from publishers and editors can provide valuable insights and help shape the narrative to create a meaningful book.
  4. Turning Pain into Purpose: Finding one’s purpose often involves introspection and seeking guidance from others. By sharing personal experiences and helping others who are going through similar challenges, writers can turn their pain into a purposeful endeavor.
  5. Collaboration and Support: The input and support of others, such as publishers and mentors, can greatly contribute to the success of a book. Engaging in conversations and seeking guidance from trusted individuals can help writers refine their ideas and bring their stories to life.
