The Importance Of Handwritten Notes In Business

Welcome to episode 232 of The Entrepreneurial You podcast. Today’s episode is with David Wachs. A serial entrepreneur, David’s latest venture, Handwrytten, is bringing back the lost art of letter writing through scalable, robot-based solutions that write your notes in pen. Developed as a platform, Handwrytten lets you send notes from your CRM system, such as Salesforce, website, apps, or through custom integration. Used by major meal boxes, eCommerce giants, nonprofits and professionals, Handwrytten is changing the way brands and people connect. Prior to his current initiatives, David founded Cellit, a mobile marketing platform and mobile agency. Cellit was sold to HelloWord in January of 2012. Both Handwrytten and Cellit were on Inc. Magazine’s Inc 500 list of fastest growing companies. David now also writes for Inc. Magazine with his column “Stepping Away from the Day to Day.”  This is our conversation on “The Importance of Hand-Written Notes in Business.”

Handwrytten notes have allowed businesses to extend the simple courtesy of a thank you to their customers. People have unlimited options when it comes to where they purchase goods and services,by sending a note customers see their value and it acts as an investment into the relationship with the customers.

Businesses should practice consistency when it comes to adding the personal touch of handwritten notes. Wachs advises businesses to ensure that their message and reach are the same on all platforms whether it is in-store or online. Greetings and welcome to episode 231 of The Entrepreneurial You podcast. Today’s episode is with Anthony Zhang, co-founder of Vinovest. Vinovest is a platform that is democratizing access to fine wine investing. Anthony is a repeat entrepreneur who successfully built and sold two companies, EnvoyNow and KnowYourVC, by the age of 22. He has also held leadership positions at cryptocurrency platform, Blockfolio and is a board member at RateMyInvestor. Here is our conversation on “Getting Started in the Wine Business.”
Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Learn about Wine Investing and how it can work for you
Learn about Venovest and how it could help you on your Wine Investment journey.
Get professional recommendations on some of the best players in the wine market and some tips on how you can get more into wine.

Episode Highlights

Wine Investing

Wine investing is the process of buying and storing wine and then selling it as it appreciates over time.
Venovest is one of the premier wine investing platforms. Vinovest goes as far as to help investors pick wines that are good for investment, store the wine, insure it, and help you to monitor the market prices and trends for you to get the best returns on your investment.

The Golden Keys to Wine Investing
Before you can start investing, there are a few things you NEED to pay attention to;

Ageability – Wine with long aging ability allows investors to hold on to it for longer and make more from this investment.
Supply and Demand – The less of an available product, the higher the selling price. Therefore, Wine Investors usually look for wines that are not very popular as the remaining supply is more valuable.
Brand Value – Some wines are considered more luxurious than others, as such the prices and long-term returns will reflect that.

If a Wine investor can tap into all three of these aspects, they will see greater returns on their investment.

Investment  takes  a little time

When  Wine Investing it  will take a while for investors to see returns on their investment because:

Wine takes time to age and, the older it is the greater the returns;
Wine Investment is a stable investment, the returns may sometimes be slow but, they are sure and safe.

Before a person starts  Wine Investing they should;.

Do  Research;
Make a Budget for the amount they want to invest and assess the risks;
LET IT GO!  Have patience and give it time for the investment to start making its returns.

Is this Risky Business?
There is little regulation when it comes to Wine Investing therefore; investors have to look out for a few things such as:

Fraud – Be careful who you buy your wine from and do not trust third parties unless you know exactly who they are. It is best to order your wine straight from the winery.

Insurance – Wine needs to be properly stored however, the change in climate and day-to-day handling of the wine can cause damage or loss so investors must have insurance and proper storage for their investment.

Launching A Product In A Competitive Market With No Prior Experience

Today’s episode is with Lucas Walker, a serial entrepreneur who has started three successful businesses in the software, e-commerce, and media spaces, working on bootstrapped and venture-funded companies. He has reviewed more than 10,000 eCommerce stores as a part of his work over the past couple of years and, today we will discuss ‘Launching a Product in a Competitive Market with No Prior Experience.’
Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Learn about the key things to consider when launching a new product.
Learn about some of the costs to consider when starting or launching a business.
Learn about a checklist of things needed to successfully launch a business in the ‘new normal.’

Episode Highlights
What is the difference between a product and a service launch?

When launching a service, business owners must focus on grabbing the attention of their potential clients. When launching a product, business owners must focus on making sales and tap into other markets.
It is also vital that when a business is launching a service it accounts for the cost to offer the service and ask questions such as ‘who will it cater to?’ ‘How will it make your profit?’ As for a product, it’s key to knowing how much needs to be produced and how much time it will take.

Costs to Consider when Starting up:

The Software
A Legal team for potential Lawsuits or other Law related matters
Taxes
Revenue and its turnover time
Contingencies
Customer care
Time – How much of my time will it cost me to carry out a given task.

What is the Sales Process like?

It is essential to build a relationship with potential buyers/distributors for at least 6-8 months before they begin to sell your products.
Work with your buyers and do not be afraid to ask for help so they can give you advice about the marketplace and what would ensure that you have a successful launch.

The Entrepreneurial Checklist for Launching a Product in the “New Normal”

Audience Collection – Start thinking about your potential clients or customers and reaching out via email or SMS;
Create a low-cost (not free) Landing page or website – Use this platform to build customer engagement and collect relevant data and feedback from your customers.
Find the appropriate channel for business – Find a supplier for your product that has existing dominance in that industry space.
Post Launch – Find out what your customers like or didn’t like and be very upfront about what you are working on and the changes you plan to make.

Who do you need on your team?
When launching a new product or service a few team members are vital to ensure all goes well, these include;

Strong Writer – A business requires a lot of communication. It is good to have someone with excellent communication skills both for internal and external matters.
Sales Representative
Marketing Personnel

Other positions can be filled with Freelancers from platforms such as Upwork or Fiverr

Adrenal Fatigue: Why Aren’t More Medical Doctors Diagnosing It?

This is  the final episode in our ‘Slow Down and Live’ Health and wellness Series. It has been an informative and educational journey. We are closing out the series with a presentation by Dr Joan Lamle, who is actually my Naturopath.  Dr Lamle will be looking at the very prevalent but often misdiagnosed matter of Adrenal Fatigue, one of the things that I was diagnosed with. Stay tuned as Dr Lamle with us on the topic of ‘Adrenal Fatigue: Why Aren’t More Medical Doctors Diagnosing It?’  Dr. Joan Lamle is a Natural Health Consultant who specializes in lifestyle diseases with a special emphasis on women’s health.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Learn about the Adrenal glands and the purpose they serve.
Learn about the different stages of Adrenal fatigue.
Learn about the necessary  changes that need to be made to have  healthy adrenal function.

Episode Highlights

Our Adrenal Glands are more important than you think.

The Adrenal Gland is located just above the Kidneys and produces hormones that regulate metabolism, the immune system, blood pressure, and stress response. When you undergo chronic stress it leads to Adrenal Fatigue. The Adrenal gland releases Cortisol which regulates blood pressure in stressful situations or conditions i.e your fight or flight response. However, if constantly stressed this Cortisol can become harmful to the body in more ways than one.
Adrenal Fatigue and its progression to Adrenal Exhaustion occurs when the adrenal in the body is unable to turn off. This can be the result of things such as underlying infections, nutrition deficiencies, leaky gut syndrome, and an overload of toxicities.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal Fatigue is much more common than we think and you might just be experiencing it at this very moment. Here are a few tips to help you spot the signs so you too can slow down and live.

Feeling tired but wired: even though you are tired you have a constant need to get things done.

Fatigue
Irritability
Low sex drive
Trouble Sleeping
Cognitive Issues- Brain fog
Hormonal Imbalance
Depression
Increased Energy Levels in the Evenings
Craving of Salty and Sweet foods

Balance is Key

The body was made to help us survive therefore, we have to recognize how our actions can compromise our ability to do so. Adrenal exhaustion will affect us when the Adrenals can no longer meet the demands of its environment.

Whenever our systems are compromised by a lack of rest, nutrition, or otherwise, our body sends off alarms and the onus is on us to pay attention to these alarms.  We must therefore strike some kind of balance in our life to ensure our Adrenal system does not overwork itself.  As such we must consider several aspects of our lives and put thought into how our actions are affecting us.

Dr. Lamle explores nutrition and the things we should be having versus the ones we should avoid to repair and take care of our Adrenal System. She also solidifies the importance of rest as we have heard from several of our speakers in the ‘Slow down and live’ series.

Rest is very vital to our quality of life and can help to reduce stress hormones and improve adrenal function. Exercise is just as important as our body needs the ability to use some of the energy it stores and there are fun ways to do so, not to mention the rush of dopamine that comes at the end of a good workout.

Dr. Lamle also highlights the importance of healing your gut to restore overall balance in your body. Exposure to Sunlight is also an affirmative action for improved …

Miracle Mineral: Magnesium As A Response To Burn Out

As we continue our health and wellness journey, I must tell you I am super excited to share today’s episode because we are going to be looking at what has become my favourite food supplement and that is Magnesium.

Ian Clark founded Activation Products out of a personal health crisis like me who created the Slow Down & Live Health Summit as a result of health challenges that I faced in 2020.  Stay tuned as Ian shares with us on the topic of ‘Miracle Mineral: Magnesium As A Response To Burn Out.’
Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Learn how Magnesium functions in the body.
Learn about the different forms of Magnesium and how we can take it.
Hear about Ian Clark’s personal experience with his energy’s and what his own imbalance taught him about life and how to get the best out of it.

Episode Highlights

Your Body Demands Magnesium

Low Magnesium levels can affect brain power, our Immune system, Endocrine system,  Metabolism, Nervous system, Digestive system, Respiratory System, Cardiovascular system, and many other aspects of your bodily function.
Magnesium among other necessary minerals is found in some of the food we eat. However, over the years this has depleted as a result of practices such as mono farming and agricultural businesses that focus on mass-producing rather than quality production.

Magnesium Can Affect the Body’s Nervous System

The body’s control system is the Autonomic nervous system. This system has two arms which are the Sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Both of these systems must operate synchronized to avoid sympathetic stress lock. This kind of lock-in can result in the inability to digest and heal properly. However, with the correct levels of Magnesium, this can be avoided or corrected.
Magnesium affects your entire human operating network. Therefore, lack of this mineral can affect things such as your brain function and result in brain fog and anxiety as well as it may affect your instinct and your passions.

Magnesium a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

A lack of Magnesium has a creeping effect on one’s body and it can trigger a series of illnesses that can turn into long term underlying issues.
The body operates with three energies; Chi, Jing, and Shen. Our Chi Energy has to do with the energy we put into our body via food.   People are often advised to eat as organic as possible and maintain a healthy diet to avoid the burnout that comes as a result of bad Chi.
Jing Energy is recognized as the body’s natural battery. The energy we are born with contributes to length and quality of life.  Jing energy is very sensitive and is sometimes abused because people fail to find the balance between the Chi and the Jing. A lack of rest and poor eating habits force our bodies to tap into more of our Jing than we should have, which results in us taking years off our life without even realizing it.
Our Shen Energy is our character and how we treat others. Our Chi and Jing affect our Shen so it is important to find a balance and live better. All three of these energies can be affected by having the right amount of Magnesium or the lack thereof, Therefore it is important to have Magnesium in some way shape or form to increase your quality of life.  It won’t be an overnight process but we are reminded that micro-adjustments can yield macro results.

3 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

Parenting and Behavioural Health in Caribbean Children

This week we pick up with the presentation from Professor Jaipaul Roopnarine on Parenting And Behavioural Health In Caribbean Children. Professor Roopnarine is Professor of Human Development and Family Science, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.
Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Learn more about what has been happening globally with children’s mental/behavioral health since the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Learn about Parental practices in the Caribbean and its effects as well as learn about how home environments affect children.
Learn about positive parenting and how it can benefit children’s development and mental and developmental health.

Episode Highlights
Children have been mentally affected by the Pandemic

Children just like adults have been victims of the Covid-19 Pandemic and have been facing mental and behavioural issues such as Frustration, Boredom, separation fears ,clingy behaviour, Anxiety and Depression among other things. However, they  have been demonstrating resilience and use activities such  fantasy play and artistic expression to cope with the lock downs that have come as a result of the Pandemic.Things that contribute to this resilience include demonstration of attitudes of gratitude, forming trusting relationship with adults and expressions of hope and love for reassurance.

Parenting Practices and Environment affects children’s behaviour.

In the Caribbean there are several different parenting styles, parental practices and environments and each of these are risk factors for childrents mental and behavioral development.Parents basic goals are for children to develop a sense of agency and communion to help them develop and cope in society however, in Caribbean society children combat issues such as crime and violence, harsh parenting, neglectful parenting, separation usually due to migration, parental instability, poverty, suicide, substance abuse , natual disasters  and more recently the pandemic.

While research shows that many caribbean children’s self assessment of happiness is high there are also concerns that are alarming as some children fear abuse whether physically or sexually and a percentage of them have already experienced both forms of abuse as well as psychological aggression from those around them.

Research shows that there are two groups of parents in the Caribbean and Suriname. They can be understood as high in warmth and low in harshness which usually produces optimal behavioural development in children while the other is high in warmth and high is harshness which usually places children in a place for behavioural and academic difficulties.

Caribbean parents use 4 main parenting styles: Authoritative Democratic, Autocratic, Permissive and Neglectful/uninvolved. Research in the Caribbean revealed that over ⅓ of parents use the Authoritative democrartic style, 20% use an Authoritarian style  with a smaller percentage proving to be permissive. However the neglectful category had an alarming rate of about 30% across the different countries. These different parenting styles produce different behavioural patterns in children that can range from healthy to unhealthy in terms of internal and external behaviours.
While discipline is very important to children’s  behavioural development as it helps to instill their understanding of right and wrong the act of discipling ones child in the Caribbean can  sometimes be harsh and Professor Roopnarine explored ways in which this happens in the Caribbean region versus other nations as well as its effects  both in the homes in wider society and suitable alternatives.

Being A Black Business Owner In America

We need to take the time to help each other, to support each other, to care for our youths, and instill wisdom in our youths. Don’t just talk about the change, be about the change. In this episode, we are joined by Eli Smith to learn from his experience as being a Black business owner in America.
Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Discover how you can be a successful business owner.
Learn how you can establish your worth.
Learn how to stay positive and motivated as a Black business owner living in America

Episode Highlights
What Is It Like Being Black In America?

Eli shared that it is a struggle being Black in America.
Eli mentioned that there is the constant feeling of not being able to breathe.
He shared that being Black we hear more “no’s” than “yes”.
We are constantly fighting to just find our worth; trying to create values within our own communities.
Being Black in America, you feel as though you always have to try to match up in order to be equals.
We need to show support to those in our communities.
Eli believes we need to normalize building up our fellow Black business owners and aspiring business owners instead of tearing them down.

Divide & Conquer- What Role Does This Play In Our Society Today?

Eli shared that the ‘Divide & Conquer’ phenomenon during the time of slavery, and even to this day was how Whites were able to get members of the Black community to turn against each other.
Eli spoke on a powerful concept, “Redlining”- where banks would give certain loans to those who wished to purchase a home. In certain communities, he shared that they would make sure that Blacks would not be able to own homes; placing them all together in particular cities. In doing so, it was easier for policing, easier for them to enter communities and assault Black men or women, and to treat Black children unfavorably.
In these communities, you’ll find high rates of unemployment and schools without proper teaching systems.

How Can We Shift Our Mindset?

Eli also shared that in his role as a Black business owner, he always tries to give back to the community through his foundations and through his yearly summit known as the Dream Summit.
For this annual summit, he would get business professionals to come in and talk about How to Create Wealth and Value Within the Black Community.
He also shared that his company represents diversity- by hiring people from all over the world.

Eli Shares His Background

Eli shared that from the age of 17, he learned the value of a contract through his father’s teachings.
Eli also shared that even from a young age, he always knew that he wanted to pursue a career in business.
He shared that his father taught him to realize that with everything you are told, make sure you do your research to know if it’s true.

Knowing Your Worth

Eli shared that many times we look in our communities for praise and honor, and a lot of times there are always people trying to keep us down.
There should not have to be a policy to tell you to love your fellow men.
Eli also shared that we should not place our faith in a government that has tried to keep us down.
